Incipio IPH-632 Review by J.H.S. (Willow Grove, Pennsylvania United States)
I've had this case since the first week of November 2011. I bought it for a new iPhone 4S. I must say, this is one of the best cases I've ever owned for a phone. I've bought everything from the cheapest cases to the most expensive for past phones. One of the most expensive cases I've ever owned was a Droid case that started out okay but literally fell apart at the seams after a few months. This case is holding up very well. It's a silicone case, so if you're particularly rough or harsh on your phone, expect fast wear and tear. I use my iPhone regularly but I'm careful with it and never beat it up or throw it around as I've seen a lot of others do. Not only do my phones look the same at the end of my contract as they did the day I bought them, but cases last pretty good as well. So for that expensive case to fail, it really must have been rubbish. This affordable case on the other hand, is not rubbish and fits the phone like a glove. It offers a stylish non-slip gripping surface, and all buttoins, cameras, and openings have perfect cut-outs. Nothing is obstructed, not even partially. My 4S fits perfect. The only intentionally covered buttons are the volume buttons and power button. The thickness and flexibility of the case is just right, allowing me to easily push the buttons whenever needed, even without looking. The bottom of the scase is cut so perfectly, it allows my iphone to fit on my speaker dock without removing the case. Now that is a major plus. I mainly carry the phone in my pocket and occassionally some lint will intrude, but it's nothing a can of spray air and a quick wipe with a cloth can't fix. If anything gets really bad or a lot of debris finds its way into the case, the case is easily removable for cleaning or whatever the need may be. I am very happy with this case and very satisfied with my purchase. This has become my new iPhone case of choice. And the price only makes it better.
Incipio IPH-632 Review by S.P. (Tennessee, USA)
Full disclosure: I did get this case for free as part of a Verizon promotion, so I appreciate that it was certainly good for the price I paid, but I'll try to write this review with Amazon's list price in mind. At the lower price points, it might be worth more like 4 stars, but it depends on your level of willingness to buy a new case in a few months.
Aesthetics: Good for a couple of months.. then bad. (I uploaded a photo to the customer images for this product to demonstrate its current condition.)
When I first got the "White" (white and grey) case with my new phone in July, I loved it. It was a great complement to my sleek white iPhone 4 from an aesthetic perspective.
However, with regular use, the plastic on the outside of the case began to discolor and also to chip. The sleek grey turned partially brown, which was accentuated when that brown chipped away to reveal the underlayer of shinier grey plastic. (The hard plastic portion of the case is basically coated with a layer of "softer" matte plastic on the outside, which is apparent if you compare it to the inside. That coating chips away fairly easily.) I think the discoloration is partly a known problem: I remember the Verizon salesperson warning me not to leave my phone in the sun because the case might discolor, but I certainly wasn't intentionally trying to give my case a tan, so the problem is worse than I expected considering that my phone has seen only very normal use with no unusual amount of sun exposure. I think the matte coating also just picks up dirt and oil from your hands and eventually stains permanently.
Ergonomics: Good.
The combination of soft silicone and hard plastic made the case pretty ergonomically pleasing: the iPhone 4 is a little too slim and slippery to really be comfortable to hold without a case, so the case added some grip, but without adding too much (meaning it didn't stick to my pocket or pick up too much dust like an all-silicone case would). The case is not at all bulky but adds just enough volume to make the phone fit your hand a bit better.
Usability: Good.
All ports are easily accessible; case fits well; camera and flash not blocked; etc.
Drop protection: Fine for minor drops, but certainly not indestructible.
I drop my phone... a lot. Not that I'm not careful with it, but I'm clumsy, so it's just a fact of life. I would have automatically gotten something like an Otterbox had this case not been given to me for free. Fortunately, my phone has suffered only one minor ding after many, many drops on hard surfaces while I have had this case. The ding is at the very bottom edge on the front face of the phone, a space where it's only protected by a soft silicone part of the case, and it's small. Otherwise, the case has protected my phone well in terms of drops. The hard-soft design, while not seeming as sturdy as some other cases, is actually kind of genius for minor drop protection. I notice that when I pick up my phone after dropping it, the hard and soft parts have been jolted out of alignment in a way that seems to demonstrate surprisingly clever impact absorption. The key is just that the case needs to make contact on one of its hard surfaces to have this benefit, as the ding in my phone indicates.
Other protection: Almost none.
No screen protection, no port protection, no dust protection, blahblahblah. It's a basic case. It also doesn't really protect the back against scratches because it doesn't fit snugly enough to keep dust from entering behind the silicone, and the trapped dust can definitely scratch up your phone. That won't hurt functionality, but it might hurt your feelings.
Quality: Meh.
Besides the aesthetic issues that I mentioned, the thinner areas of the silicone part are not terribly durable. Bits of the silicone in mine are starting to tear, and they also bunch up as well as stretch out after a while so that the hard case and soft case no longer meet up as well. I think if the silicone part fit more snugly and were a little sturdier, this would be a better case overall. At any rate, I'm having to retire this case after five months (and probably should have after three months, but I ended up waiting until Christmas in hopes Santa might deliver one of those absurdly-priced Lifeproof cases to me).
Summary: Don't plan on it lasting even half a year with any kind of regular use, and if you do buy it, be aware that you'll be shopping for a new case before half a year has passed. Also, if you need more than minor drop protection, buy something sturdier. However, if you just want a cute, basic case that is cheap enough that you won't have to feel bad when you want some new case that comes out three months from now, it's not a terrible choice.
